Vocabulary for Light and Sound
Light Vocabulary
light - a form of energy that we see and travels in a straight line
reflection - When light waves BOUNCE off objects
refraction - The bending of light as it moves from one material to another. Materials that allow light to bend: water, prisms, oil, lenses.
translucent - Allowing only some of the light to pass through. Examples of materials that are translucent: wax paper and frosted glass.
opaque - Not allowing light to pass through. Examples of materials that are opaque: box, tree, people, and table
transparent - Allowing light to pass through. Examples of things that are transparent are: glass, window, eye glasses and a car windshield.
concave lens - a lens that is thin in the middle and thick at the edges.
convex lens - a lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges.
prism - a clear plastic or glass triangular object that refracts white light, separating the colors into all colors of the rainbow.
visible spectrum - all light that we see, or the colors of the rainbow we can see
white light - All the colors of the rainbow mixed together
ROY G BIV- Colors of white light: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet

Sound Vocabulary
vibration - To move back and forth quickly.
pitch - How high or low a sound is.
frequency - The number of vibrations per unit of time.
volume - The loudness of a sound
echo - when sound waves bounce back
sound waves - How sound travels.
sound - A form of energy that is made of vibrations and can be heard.
medium -The matter through which sound waves travel. (solid, liquid, gas)
